Watch this video for an inside look at how Mooresville Graded School District innovated and changed the culture of learning in their schools through the use of Discovery Education services.

Challenge

The partnership between Mooresville and Discovery Education began through an alignment of shared values leveraging each other’s expertise to move digital learning forward in a scalable and affordable manner.

When we began our partnership, Mooresville Graded School District’s student performance was ranked average among the districts in their peer group. In its endeavor to become a high-performing district, Mooresville set goals to ignite the inherent curiosity of its students and accelerate gains in student achievement while simultaneously maintaining low per-pupil spending.

Solution

Mooresville Graded School District implemented the following Discovery Education services:

Results—Higher Achievement, Lower Dropout Rate

While Mooresville Graded School District’s digital conversion is an ongoing effort, the change in culture, coupled with teachers embracing digital content as one of the engines of classroom instruction, has yielded tangible results. Mooresville student proficiency on state exams has risen to 2nd place in North Carolina, while the district has maintained some of the lowest per-pupil expenditures in the state.

In addition, during the same time period, the number of students dropping out decreased year over year.

The Hum of Student Creativity Gets Louder

Engaging Students and Parents is an Important Part of the Equation

Over 90 students, parents and teachers from the North Carolina district gathered to help celebrate the launch of the Discovery Student Network. The network plans to give students the opportunity to engage, connect and collaborate, a lot like DEN (Discovery Educator Network). After a warm welcome by CEO of Discovery Education, Bill Goodwyn, the group was lured in by all kinds of fun activities:

  • Tour of the 3D editing suites in DCTC
  • Behind the scenes look at the Smithsonian Natural Museum of History
  • Scavenger hunt
  • Glimpse of how our signal is beamed to 27 feeds from DTTC in Sterling, Virginia
