British Columbia’s West Vancouver Schools Broadens Partnership with Discovery Education to Support the Creation of Engaging and Immersive Math Lessons

-District Math Teachers of Grade 6 and 7 Students Set to Integrate Award-Winning Digital Curriculum Into Teaching and Learning –

Silver Spring, Md. (January 31, 2019)– British Columbia’sWest Vancouver Schools(WVS)today announced a broadening of their multi-year partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital curriculum resources, digital content, and professional development for K-12 classrooms worldwide.  The latest phase of this partnership supports WVS’s grade 6 and 7 teachers’ efforts to create more immersive classroom lessons that drive deeper student engagement in math instruction.

One of Canada’s highest performing school systems, WVS uses a mixture of digital resources and educational technologies to support a richly woven learning experience that educates the “whole child”.  Since 2012, Discovery Education has partnered with WVS to thoughtfully integrate digital content into classroom instruction, and the district believes the expansion of this partnership bolsters its already strong reputation for offering students a level of academic excellence that exceeds independent school and provincial results.

To support their efforts to drive greater student engagement in grade 6 and 7math instruction, the district, selected Discovery Education’s Math Techbook.  Discovery Education Techbooks are currently used by approximately 5.6 million students across the US and Canada. The award-winning Canadian Math and Science Techbooks are fully interactive and comprehensive digital textbooks.  Updated regularly at no cost, Discovery Education’s Techbooks are aligned to Canadian provincial expectations and provide educators a complete digital curriculum that includes detailed lesson plans, hands-on activities, digital simulations, and robust teacher support that immerse students in instruction.

Through interactive features that change the reading level of text and enable text to be read aloud, the Math Techbook encourages all learners. The Math Techbook connects students to mathematics through real-world problems worth solving, combines conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application to help all students develop a long-lasting mastery of mathematics.  The Math Techbook has been independently verifiedby EdReports.org to meet the highest levels of mathematical content and pedagogy.

The Math Techbook is the second Discovery Education Techbook to be selected by WVS for classroom use. Currently, WVS educators teaching 1-8 students use the Discovery Education Science Techbook to support science instruction.  A digital textbook featuring hands-on labs, digital explorations, an interactive glossary, and data analysis activities, the Science Techbook helps teach students how to read, write, and think like scientists.

“At West Vancouver Schools, we work hard to ensure our academic programs are supported with the tools, technologies, and content students are interacting with outside the classroom,” said Chris Kennedy, Superintendent of West Vancouver Schools. “The expansion of our partnership to support math instruction is the natural next step in our longstanding relationship with Discovery Education, and we look forward to getting these resources into the hands of students and teachers soon.”

To ensure the WVS educators using Math Techbook are fully supported throughout the implementation of the new math curriculum, Discovery Education experts will provide robust professional learning opportunities to district teachers. Through these interactive professional development opportunities, participants will learn best practices for integrating technology and digital content into teaching and learning in ways that will maximize the power of their new resources, increase student engagement in math instruction, and improve students’ academic achievement.

The Discovery Education Community will continue supporting WVS’s teachers as they transform students’ learning experiences with dynamic digital media. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is honored that West Vancouver Schools selected the Math Techbook to support its effort to drive deeper student engagement in math instruction,” said Jason Buccheri, Educational Partnerships Manager at Discovery Education. “We look forward to continuing to collaborate with teachers and administrators on our joint mission to prepare every student for future success.”

The American Heart Association and the National Football League Work with Discovery Education to Take Students on a Virtual Field Trip Inspired by Super Bowl LIII

— The NFL Play 60 Kids Day Live, Inspired by Super Bowl LIII, Helps Students Learn the Importance of Healthy Living and Physical Activity —

Silver Spring, Md. (Friday, January 25, 2019) — Getting 60 minutes of physical activity a day through moderate-to-vigorous and bone strengthening exercise is what is recommended for school-aged kids according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.

The guidelines recommend activities such as playing games that require catching and throwing, active games involving running and chasing, and sports that involve jumping or rapid change in direction. These exercises help to strengthen bones and provide cardiovascular benefits such as improved cognitive function, cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness, and bone health. Kids who are regularly active also have a better chance of a healthy adulthood.

“Prevention is key to improving cardiovascular health, and reducing heart disease and its risk factors. Engaging children in ‘PLAY 60’ is a strategy to make movement fun,” says American Heart Association’s Chief Medical Officer for Prevention EDUARDO SANCHEZ, M.D., MPH. “Active kids learn better. When kids are active, they focus more, think more clearly, react to stress more calmly, and perform and behave better in class. Teaching kids to be physically active now will help build healthy kids and future generations of adults with good health.”

Kids participating in the NFL PLAY 60 Kids Day Live Virtual Field Trip from Atlanta on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. ET will participate in activities in their own classroom thanks to the free, virtual instruction live-streamed in classrooms across the country. The immersive experience, aligns to National Physical Education Learning Standards, Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards. The program’s digital curriculum also explores the science behind how regular physical activity positively impacts individuals physically, mentally, socially and academically. Participants are also encouraged to join a NFL PLAY 60 Kids Day Live Twitter chat @American_Heart, @nflplay60 and @discoveryed during the Virtual Field Trip using #GetMovingPLAY60.

“The NFL’s longstanding partnership with the American Heart Association on PLAY 60 programs has helped to raise awareness around childhood obesity and physical inactivity to promote the benefits of exercise and healthy nutrition. The ‘NFL PLAY 60 Kids Day Live’ Virtual Field Trip builds on that commitment through an innovative and fun experience for students across the country, ” said NFL Senior Vice President of Social Responsibility ANNA ISAACSON. “We are excited to continue building healthier generations of youth through innovative ‘PLAY 60’ programming in partnership with our 32 teams, players and partner organizations.”

The American Heart Association, the leading voluntary health organization devoted to a world of longer, healthier lives, and the NFL in collaboration with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital curriculum resources, digital content, and professional development for K-12 classrooms, are working together to make physical activity fun and inspire healthy lifestyles.

The program teaches the importance of healthy living; and breaks down the top 10 plays to PLAY 60. Hollywood Records recording artist, JD McCrary, the voice of Young Simba in the upcoming live action remake of The Lion King, will lead students in fun and engaging physical activity at the NFL PLAY 60 Kids Day Live. And during the Virtual Field Trip experience, Atlanta Falcons players Matt Bryant and Matt Bosher will teach students the cardio and strength exercises NFL players use to stay physically fit. The session will also feature a Q&A, a physical activity session designed for a classroom setting and a behind-the-scenes look at the Atlanta Falcons practice facility and stadium, which is home to Super Bowl LIII.

“Discovery Education is proud to team up with the American Heart Association and the National Football League during the week of Super Bowl LIII to engage students in healthy lifestyles in schools and communities nationwide,” said Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Discovery Education LORI MCFARLING. “The NFL ‘PLAY 60 Kids Day Live’ Virtual Field Trip experience is fitness-focused and digitally immersive. We’re excited to inspire educators and motivate students to go the extra mile to learn more about physical activity and nutrition.”

The NFL and the American Heart Association have teamed up since 2006 to inspire kids through a fun and engaging way to get physically active each day. Research has shown that physical activity leads to increased academic performance, and that in-classroom physical activity breaks improve cognitive skills and classroom behavior. NFL PLAY 60 Kids Day Live gives more than 2,000 local youth the opportunity to spend time with NFL players, mascots and cheerleaders at the 2019 Super Bowl Experience while virtually connecting with thousands of student peers nationwide.

“The NFL ‘PLAY 60 Kids Day Live’ Virtual Field Trip experience gives my students a chance to get up, move, and learn about healthy lifestyles in order to get their recommended 60 minutes of physical activity each day,” said Hamilton Community Schools Elementary STEM Teacher ANDY LOSIK. “During the experience, students dive into immersive curriculum resources that inspire interactive play and reinforce wellness. It’s exciting to bring NFL players into the walls of my classroom to keep my students active and healthy.”

In addition to the Virtual Field Trip, the free PLAY 60 app has been redesigned this year. The PLAY 60 app allows users to control personalized avatars onscreen with their own physical movement. The app is available for iOS and Android devices.

Major League Baseball and Discovery Education Team-Up to Add Dynamic New Baseball-Themed Content to Science Techbook to Fuel Deeper Student Engagement in Science and STEM

-In Support of Core Instruction, Multiyear Partnership IntroducesCareer Explorations, Curricular Tools, and Classroom Project Starters Based on MLB’s Vast Archive and State-Of-The-Art Tracking Technology-

-Baltimore County Public Schools Host National Launch Event-

Silver Spring, Md. (January 15, 2019)– Major League Baseball(MLB) and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital curriculum, content, and professional development for K-12 classrooms, today announced the launch of a new, multiyear partnership that brings Major League Baseball’s dynamic content into Discovery Education’sScience Techbooks. The partnership launched during a special event in the Baltimore County Public Schools’ Deep Creek Middle School, during which Nicole Sherry, Head Groundskeeper for the Baltimore Orioles, worked alongside area students as they analyzed turf samples taken from Baltimore’s Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Through the collaboration between  MLB and Discovery Education, educators using Discovery Education’s Science Techbooks have been empowered with new digital resources that help students connect the world of baseball to key science and STEM concepts through real-world data and exciting gameday experiences that fuel deeper engagement.  During this initial phase of the partnership, a variety of MLB-themed content has been integrated into Discovery Education’s STEM Connect and Steaming Plus services.

“Continuously finding new and exciting ways to engage my students in science and STEM lessons is one of the biggest challenges I face as an educator,” said Michael J. Fuchs, the 7thgrade Science Teacher whose classroom hosted today’s event at Deep Creek Middle School. “The new Major League Baseball-themed content now available in Discovery Education’s digital services give me some powerful new tools and resources I will use to create immersive science lessons for my students.”

The new resources, which have real-world applications and are now available to teachers and students nationwide through the MLB- Discovery Education Partnership, include:

  • Major League Baseball-themed Career Videos
    • The videos, which were produced by Discovery Education, showcase a variety of MLB careers and help students connect what they are learning in school to multiple career options in Major League Baseball, such as a groundskeeper, data analyst, and baseball operations executive. In addition, Discovery Education Streaming Plus will be home to a new MLB-focused Content Collection, which will house a variety of baseball themed curriculum assets—including “best of” videos and images from the MLB archives—all available for educator use and their seamless integration into classroom instruction.
