— Powerful, virtual professional development event focuses on helping educators of all skill levels integrate digital content into classroom instruction —

Silver Spring, Md. (October 17, 2011) – Educators from across the globe are invited to join Discovery Education’s Fall Virtual Conference: Tech or Treat on Saturday, October 22, 2011. Available to all educators, this online and in-person professional development event will focus on digital storytelling featuring a spotlight presentation from Wes Fryer, author of Playing with Media: Simple Ideas for Powerful Sharing. Participants will also take part in a series of virtual sessions presented by the Discovery Educator Network (DEN) Gurus.

The conference will be delivered in person or via webcast to conference attendees worldwide where participants will engage in online presentations on such topics as how to integrate digital media into the classroom. Participants attending in person through regional events hosted by the DEN Leadership Councils will also take part in sessions presented by local STAR Discovery Educators, DEN members recognized for their efforts to share their insight and expertise with peers through activities such as trainings, workshops or presentations.

“Discovery Education is pleased once again to be presenting the 2011 Fall Virtual Conference,” said Scott Kinney, senior vice president, Discovery Education. “Through the Discovery Educator Network and events like this, we are proud to support educators in the United States and around the world as they transition to digital content as their core instructional tool.”

The DEN is the largest professional learning community of its kind and empowers educators through activities that facilitate the successful implementation of educational technology and digital content in the classroom. Building capacity and supporting educators around the world as they bring learning alive through digital content and educational technologies, the DEN provides teachers and administrators a variety of professional development and networking opportunities, as well as a digital library of teacher-generated projects, tools and resources.

Carolyn Stanley, an educator from Connecticut who recently attended a virtual conference said, “While sitting in my pajamas at my laptop, I tuned into the virtual conference. I only planned to stay a few minutes, but I ended up absolutely glued to my laptop as one presenter finished and another began. There is no substitute for being able to participate live in the chat, sharing your ideas and getting feedback from others in the room.”
