Augmented Reality in the Classroom

Bringing immersive learning experiences to classrooms everywhere.

augmented reality intro

What is Augmented Reality in Education?

Augmented Reality (AR) is technology that blurs the line between the digital and the real world. Using AR in education to replace a tabletop with a mountain range or the school hallway with the surface of the moon lets students interact with their surroundings in entirely new, immersive ways.

Research shows that using virtual reality learning can deepen student comprehension through interactivity, greater context to the world, and a sense of scale and proximity that might not otherwise be possible.

With new AR apps for iPad, educators and students will find a renewed sense of engagement! These virtual reality education apps are available to schools to support learning in any environment.

Sandbox AR

Sandbox AR is an augmented reality ‘maker’ app that allows students and teachers to create, share, and even inhabit virtual environments, created for immersive learning. By placing a stage on a flat surface and adding models to create a sandbox, students create a virtual world they can experience and share.

Sandbox AR includes:

  • Hundreds of models to add to a sandbox that cover history, the built world, science and nature, and more.
  • A life size mode so students can scale up their sandbox and walk into their virtual world.
  • Pre-built sandboxes exploring diverse subjects such as ancient Egypt, space exploration, road construction, and more (additional sandboxes coming soon).
  • Free, pre-built lessons that educators can use to guide AR integration into classroom instruction.

Timepod Adventures

Timepod Adventures uses state-of-the-art, life-size augmented reality in the classroom, that students can interact with and control. With a remote AI companion ADA (Autonomous Digital Assistant) by their side, students can travel through time, visit incredible locations and solve problems as they go. A web-based companion app allows for classmates to connect and collaborate remotely from anywhere. The first two adventures in this series have been created in partnership with Verizon.

Techbook AR

Techbook AR is a companion app to Discovery Education Science Techbook for Middle School. Using augmented reality, the app brings geography to life in virtual reality classrooms. Students point their camera at specially marked images within Science Techbook to see tectonic plates at work, reveal the workings of the water cycle, and watch an erupting volcano.
