– Combination of Digital Content and Sustained Professional Development to Drive District’s STEAM Initiative-

Silver Spring, MD. (January 31, 2018) – California’s Orcutt Union School District (OUSD) announced today the selection of Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, as their new partner in creating dynamic STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) teaching and learning environments districtwide. This new collaboration provides OUSD educators the dynamic digital content and job-embedded professional development they need to deliver a powerful, purposeful, and systemic approach to transdisciplinary STEAM instruction to all students across the school system.

OUSD’s new six-year collaboration with Discovery Education directly supports the school system’s Strategic Plan.  Seeking to foster high levels of student success through multiple pathways of learning, OUSD’s Strategic Plan commits to providing all students engaging high-quality instruction that promotes active learning and maximizes student achievement through an innovative 21st Century curriculum. In addition, OUSD’s new partnership with Discovery Education supports the district’s ongoing effort to continuously support its teachers’ professional development as they create flexible learning environments, implement new delivery models, and expand students’ opportunities for learning.

The integration of the award-winning Discovery Education Streaming Plus into teaching and learning across OUSD will help create the modern, engaging learning environments called for by the district’s Strategic Plan. A comprehensive digital service supplementing instruction across all K-12 curricular areas, Discovery Education Streaming Plus helps build students’ mastery in interpreting, understanding, and evaluating information. Students can access a variety of digital assets including images, primary source documents, podcasts, oral interviews, books on tape, articles, videos, and more, and are empowered to become content creators with a suite of content creation tools that help teachers and students safely and easily collaborate in real-time on virtual projects. Teacher resources include lesson plans, instructional strategies, and content collections organized around themes, as well as a collection of new STEM/STEAM resources designed to fuel a cultural shift in teaching and learning.

Discovery Education’s professional development services will also support OUSD’s Strategic Plan. Through OUSD’s STEAM Leader Academy, which is powered by Discovery Education’s STEM Leader Corp capacity building model, district administrators and teachers will learn new strategies and best practices for building and sustaining a culture of STEAM in their schools and guide them as they master new STEAM instructional approaches.  With a focus on developing high-quality STEAM instruction, creating interdisciplinary lessons and units, and vertically aligning STEAM education school-wide, this initiative provides the robust professional development, job-embedded coaching, and administrative leadership support necessary to create centers of STEAM excellence.  In addition, OUSD’s STEAM Leader Academy will also help district educators integrate Discovery Education’s Streaming Plus digital content service deeper into classroom instruction.

“At Orcutt Union School District, we have been working diligently over the last several years to provide students the learning experience and skills they need to successfully compete in a global society,” said Dr. Deborah Blow, Orcutt Union School District Superintendent. “We believe our collaboration with Discovery Education will help us create a powerful transdisciplinary STEAM program that will help prepare all our students for a successful future beyond our district’s classrooms.”

In addition to receiving access to Discovery Education’s dynamic digital content and robust STEAM professional development, the Discovery Education Community will support OUSD’s educators’ efforts to transform students’ learning experiences with dynamic digital media. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is honored to be part of OUSD’s effort to build STEAM teaching and learning environments,” said Andrew Bradigan, Regional Vice President, Discovery Education. “We are eager to work with Dr. Blow and her dedicated team of educators as we expand Orcutt students’ learning opportunities through this exciting initiative.”

– Fifth Annual IWitness Video Challenge Encourages Students to Create Community Action Video Projects to Combat Hate, Bias and Intolerance –

Silver Spring, Maryland (January 26, 2018) – In an effort to spark a social movement against hatred in all forms, USC Shoah Foundation and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, today launched the fifth annual IWitness Video Challenge.

Designed to provide actionable ways to promote equality, while also challenging bias and intolerance, the 2018 IWitness Video Challenge encourages students to make a change in communities nationwide. First, students will hear testimonies of survivors and witnesses of genocide. They will then complete a research-based and standards-aligned activity. After being inspired to counter hate, participants will develop a community action project. To be considered for the IWitness Video Challenge, students must document their experience in a video essay for submission.

“USC Shoah Foundation is proud to continue advancing the mission of the IWitness Video Challenge,” said USC Shoah Foundation Director of Education Claudia Wiedeman. “By connecting students to the voices in the Visual History Archive, the IWitness Video Challenge inspires them to act in positive and meaningful ways, and teaches them digital skills that are important for students today.”

Last year’s winners inspired their fellow classmates to celebrate their diverse identities with a project called, “Who Are You? Embracing Identity in Our Community.”

“We want the audience to learn more about themselves, to reflect on who they are and their identities, after watching our video,” said student Yu Jing Chen, one of three students who worked together on the project. “We want them to realize that they are not alone and that they should always fight for an accepting environment.”

Previous winners wrote kind notes to every student in their school, while the first winner documented her determination to stand up for undocumented workers after being moved by testimonies of Holocaust survivors who described their struggles being undocumented immigrants themselves.

Thanks to the continued support from Ford Motor Co., which is sponsoring the event as part of its commitment to innovative educational outreach, the IWitness Video Challenge will award top entries from students, teachers, and schools with scholarships and grants.

The prizes will be distributed as follows:

  • The student who creates the national winning entry will receive a $5,000 scholarship. Second place will receive a $1,000 scholarship; third place, a $500 scholarship.
  • The educator associated with the national winning entry will receive a $1,000 grant to inspire, impact and implement change in their local school.
  • The school or organization associated with the national winning entry will receive a $2,500 grant to implement change in their community.

Launched in 2013, the IWitness Video Challenge was designed around the premise that one person can make a difference. As USC Shoah Foundation founder Steven Spielberg said at the time of the inaugural launch, “we can use IWitness to show the power of random acts of kindness – the best way to teach empathy is by using the power of example.”

“As an educator, I have observed the positive differences in students’ behavior after partaking in the IWitness Video Challenge,” said Karen Wells from Midland High School in Pleasant Plains, Arkansas. “The contest has been a proven catalyst for change in our community and I plan on encouraging all of my students to submit entries this year.”

“The IWitness Video Challenge empowers youth nationwide to take a stand against hatred in all forms,” said Lori McFarling, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Discovery Education. “Peer-to-peer influence is powerful and we are invested in providing actionable ways for students to promote equality, challenge bias and discuss tolerance. We hope that by participating in the contest, students will be able to view the world through a different lens and recognize the importance of stopping oppression everywhere.”

Submissions for the 2018 IWitness Video Challenge are being accepted now until April 13, 2018. For more information and complete rules, visit IWitness.usc.edu.

Silver Spring, Md. (January 12, 2018) – Louisiana’s Livingston Parish Public Schools (LPPS) today announced an expansion of their multi-year partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms. In the latest phase of this ongoing collaboration, educators in all 45 LPPS schools will begin creating rich and immersive science learning experiences aligned to the Louisiana Science Standards by integrating Discovery Education’s Science Techbook into K-12 instruction.

LPPS’s adoption of Science Techbook supports the district’s goal of creating technology-rich environments that improve student achievement and produce lifelong learners equipped to succeed in today’s information society. While all LPPS educators have used Discovery Education’s Streaming Plus to create dynamic digital learning environments since 2016, the implementation of Science Techbook empowers district educators to more deeply engage students in scientific and engineering practices. In addition, the introduction of Science Techbook will also help district educators apply crosscutting concepts to science instruction in ways that help deepen student understanding of core ideas and improve academic achievement.

Discovery Education’s Techbooks are award-winning digital textbooks aligned to rigorous standards, supportive of a comprehensive curriculum, and updated regularly at no cost. The series encourages all learners through interactive features that change the reading level of text and enable text to be read aloud. The Techbook series saves teachers’ time with a comprehensive design that places model lessons, student activities and assessments at their fingertips. Techbooks are platform neutral and can be used in one-to-one or one-to-many configurations and in any instructional environment.

Discovery Education’s Science Techbook series empowers educators to transform science instruction. Utilizing an inquiry-based format built on the Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate (5E) model, each Science Techbook includes rich, standards-aligned content such as video, audio, text, interactives with hands-on activities, and virtual labs that help educators differentiate instruction and provide a rich and engaging learning experience for students. “The Livingston Parish Public Schools believe the goal of our educational program is to prepare each and every one of our students to become successful, contributing members of society,” said Superintendent Rick Wenzel of the Livingston Parish Public Schools. “To achieve this goal, we need partners dedicated to providing our students resources and content that will help them not only develop a deep understanding of essential knowledge and skills, but the capacity to apply their learning, to reason, solve problems, and produce quality work as well.  Discovery Education shares this vision, and we are pleased to deepen our partnership with them to support the success of all our students.”

LPPS’s educators will also to participate in sustained, job-embedded professional development from Discovery Education’s expert faculty that will help district educators evolve their teaching practice and effectively use their new digital resources. Also, the Discovery Education Community will continue supporting LPPS’ teachers’ efforts to transform students’ learning experiences with dynamic digital media. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

11th Annual ‘Young Scientist Challenge’ Opens for Submissions from America’s Young Scientists

Silver Spring, Maryland (Thursday, January 11, 2018) – 3M (@3M), a leader in Materials Science, and Discovery Education (@DiscoveryEd), the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms across the country, today announced the opening of the annual Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. The Young Scientist Challenge is the nation’s premier science competition for middle school students. Through the program, aspiring young innovators and scientists have the unique opportunity to work with a 3M scientist mentor, be named America’s Top Young Scientist and take home a $25,000 prize.

The Young Scientist Challenge encourages fifth through eighth grade students to use their scientific insight to create solutions to everyday problems in their local, national or global communities. Last year’s winner, 11-year old Gitanjali Rao, was awarded the challenge’s grand prize for her prototype of Tethys, a sensor-based device designed to detect lead in water faster than current techniques.

“The Young Scientist Challenge is a great opportunity for any middle school student to apply their interest in science to creating an innovation that helps improve the lives of others,” said Rao. “Being paired with a 3M scientist as my mentor was especially helpful when I was stuck on a problem or needed to talk through an idea.”

Middle school students are invited to submit their own entries to this year’s challenge by creating a one-to-two-minute video that explains the science behind their idea, and how it can improve lives by solving an everyday problem. Submissions will be judged based on creativity, scientific knowledge, persuasiveness and overall presentation. Ten finalists will then be selected to participate in a one-of-a-kind summer mentorship program with 3M scientists’ and eventually go on to compete for the title of America’s Top Young Scientist, including an October 2018 trip to 3M’s World Headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota.

All video entries must be submitted online at youngscientistlab.com/challenge no later than April 19, 2018. Videos will not be judged on production skills and may be recorded on cell phones or basic digital cameras.

“These brilliant, hardworking students combine a sense of wonder about the world around them with the absolute belief that they can make it a better place,” said Paul Keel, senior vice president of Business Development and Marketing-Sales at 3M. “It’s our privilege at 3M to work with them as they grow as scientists and bring that potential to life.”

Launched in 2016, Young Scientist Lab is an interactive portal for scientific exploration and home to the award-winning Young Scientist Challenge. It is a one-stop STEM destination for educators, students and parents, offering engaging K-8 activities, lesson plans and interactive teaching tools to stimulate budding scientists. Students can also find inspiration on how innovation can solve problems across industries – including manufacturing, energy, safety, healthcare, transportation and more. The Young Scientist Lab also provides users with recent science news, Virtual Field Trips and new blogs about the Young Scientist Challenge.

“Discovery Education is proud to support 3M and their work to ignite students’ creativity and support the wonder of the next generation of scientists,” said Lori McFarling, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Discovery Education. “The Young Scientist Challenge has inspired thousands of innovators, dreamers and doers to solve real-world problems and demonstrates the real power of science to improve the lives of everyone, everywhere, every day.”

Since its inception, the Young Scientist Challenge has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships and prizes, paired students with exceptional scientists, and provided science resources to millions of students, teachers and families across the country. In 2017, six girls and four boys were chosen as the top 10 finalists.

“As educators, we are always striving to enrich students with the skills they need to solve problems facing their family, local or global community,” said Francie Snyder, Manatee County elementary school educator. “The Young Scientist Challenge not only stimulates scientific exploration but also gives young people an opportunity to bring their imagined concepts come to life.”
