14-Year-Old Named America’s Top Young Scientist

–Kara Fan Wins Top Prize at 2019 3M Young Scientist Challenge for her Nano-Silver Liquid Bandage Innovation–

St. Paul, Minn. and Silver Spring, Md. (Wednesday, October 30, 2019) –3M (@3M) and Discovery Education (@DiscoveryEd), have named 14-year-old Kara Fan from San Diego, California, the winner of the 2019 3M Young Scientist Challenge (#YoungScientist). Kara invented a first aid liquid bandage using nano-silver technology to reduce the risk of superbug infections caused by antibiotic overuse.

Using the biosynthesis method—a multi-step, enzyme-catalyzed process where substrates are converted into more complex products in living organisms—Kara created a nano-silver (AgNP) solution using lemon leaf and silver nitrate to effectively kill and prevent the growth of bacteria. Her solution was tested using the Kirby-Bauer Method against Staphylococcus epidermidis, E. coli K12 and Bacillus subtilis on a Petri plate to measure the zone of inhibition (the circular area around the spot of the antibiotic use in which bacteria colonies do not grow). Finally, Kara mixed the nano-silver solution with a water-soluble polymer (PVP) to create the liquid bandage.

Kara formulated a nano-silver liquid bandage to replace the use of more commonly used over-the-counter antibiotics ointments and first aid treatments. With her invention, Kara hopes to reduce the number of incidents related to drug-resistant infections.

Kara, a ninth-grader at Westview High School, Poway Unified School District, competed against nine other finalists during a live competition at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minn. October 28-29. As the winner of this year’s 3M Young Scientist Challenge, Kara was awarded the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist” as well a $25,000 cash prize and a surprise destination trip.

“Our communities want science to solve the world’s toughest challenges; we hear this in our research on the State of Science. This year’s finalists have truly inspired us with their ingenious efforts to think innovatively and solve real-world problems,” said Denise Rutherford, senior vice president, corporate affairs at 3M. “As a company that remains deeply committed to STEM education and advancement, we wish this next generation of science leaders the best on their continued journey. Congratulations to this year’s winner, Kara Fan, and all our Young Scientist Challenge finalists.”

As part of the program, challenge finalists had the unique opportunity to work one on one with a 3M scientist to transform their ideas from concept to physical prototype as part of the competition’s mentorship program. Kara was paired with Sara Frisco, a 3M advanced product development engineer in the commercial solutions division.

At the final event, finalists presented their inventions to a panel of scientists and leaders from 3M and Discovery Education. In addition to presenting their prototypes, finalists were also paired up to compete in two mini-challenges in which they used 3M technologies and materials to solve, and were evaluated on skills such as collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

This year’s Young Scientist Challenge finalists received a variety of prizes from 3M and Discovery Education. The second, third and fourth place winners each received a $1,000 prize and one of a kind destination trip. These extraordinary students are:

In second place, Caroline Crouchley, an eighth-grader at Garden City Middle School from Garden City, New York, developed a sustainable method of public transportation that eliminates the need for a diesel engine or electric motor in trains.

Classrooms Worldwide Invited to Join Discovery Education and Polar Bears International for an Exciting Virtual Field Trip to the Arctic Tundra

-Registration is Open for the Live, No-Cost, Virtual Experience Transporting Students to the Site of the Annual Canadian Polar Bear Migration-

Silver Spring, Md. (October 28, 2019) – Discovery Education and Polar Bears International, the only nonprofit with a sole focus on polar bears, are again teaming up to present students and teachers with a no-cost Virtual Field Trip to the Arctic Tundra.  Through the magic of technology, participants will be transported to the shores of the Hudson Bay in Churchill, Canada, to witness the annual polar bear migration, investigate the Arctic habitat, and explore the lives and careers of the people that work and live in the polar region.  Discovery Education is the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms.

This year, Discovery Education and Polar Bears International are offering students and teachers two ways to participate in the Tundra Connections virtual experience.  During Experience Polar Bears on the Tundra, occurring on Wednesday, November 13 at 12:00 PM Central Time and again on Thursday, November 14 at 11:30 AM Central Time, participants will travel to the Arctic to take a deep dive into that region’s unique ecosystem.  Among the topics students and teachers will explore during this roughly 30-minute live event are adaptations, sea ice habitat, climate change, and of course, polar bears!

Discovery Education & Corporate Program Partners Recognize Red Ribbon Week with New Resources to Aid in Substance Abuse Prevention

–Comprehensive Instructional Tools Focus on Prevention of Underage Drinking and Opioid and Prescription Medication Misuse–

Silver Spring, MD (October 24, 2019) — Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital curriculum resources, digital content, and professional development for K – 12 classrooms nationwide, continues to add to the portfolio of Corporate Education Partnership programs that provide students, families, and employees with cross-disciplinary, standards-aligned resources and fact-based evidence to support educating students about the dangers of substance misuse. Aligning with this year’s Red Ribbon Week theme of “Send a Message. Stay Drug Free,” these programs provide proactive strategies to help ensure the health, wellbeing, and safety of our students and communities nationwide.

Ask, Listen, Learn: Kids and Alcohol Don’t Mix, a program of Responsibility.org in partnership with Discovery Education offers no-cost, standards-aligned lessons and digital resources to teach students in grades 5-7 the science behind how alcohol affects their developing brains, bodies, and behavior. The program features a series of short videos, lesson plans, and parent resources to help kids say “YES” to a healthy lifestyle and “NO” to underage drinking. A new interactive digital exploration coming this fall will dive into the science of how alcohol impacts the developing brain and strategies to navigate peer pressure. Students will meet Alex, a 6th grade student, who is invited to attend a party where there is likely to be alcohol. Students will learn refusal strategies from the tactics she uses to make smart, healthy, and safe decisions to say “NO” to underage drinking.

Created in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Operation Prevention provides students in grades 3-12 with an in-depth look at the science behind addiction and the extremely harmful impact opioid misuse has on lives of those that become addicted. Three on-demand virtual trips takes students inside opioid addiction and communities coping with the epidemic, and newly updated classroom resources, a self-paced module and parent resources give students in-depth lessons that aid them in making well-informed choices. New workplace resources to be released in the Spring will focus on providing employers with tools to educate and support their employees with information on the opioid crisis, including how opioids affect the brain and body, how to seek treatment, where to find preventative resources, and how to interact with those who have been directly affected.

Dose of Knowledge, a Pharmacists Teach program created in partnership with CVS Health and Discovery Education, officially launches in January 2020 and will feature a suite of digital resources for pharmacists, educators, and students grades 9 – 12, including classroom activities, digital lesson bundles, and student-led digital interactives. The program is aligned to UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being and is focused on the importance of healthy lifestyle choices and empowering students with the facts about prescription and illicit drug misuse.

“It is more important than ever that we provide educators, parents and communities with instructional resources to support their efforts to deliver these vital lessons about the dangers of substance misuse,” said Lori McFarling, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Discovery Education. “Public health is of key concern to Discovery Education and our partners, and we look forward to continuing the work to ensure that students are prepared to make healthy choices that will benefit their long-term goals and future success.”

Inspire students to better understand and combat hatred: In collaboration with Discovery Channel’s global premiere of WHY WE HATE, a six-part docuseries that explores the reasons why humans hate in an effort to prevent and combat hatred, Discovery Education is proud to introduce a collection of powerful instructional resources for middle and high school classrooms that connect the important themes of the docuseries to classroom instruction. Available in Discovery Education Experience and Social Studies Techbook, the WHY WE HATE collection of resources includes Discovery Education-produced videos focused on the origins of hate, the biology of hate, and tribalism; classroom activities; an educator guide; a family viewing guide; and related first-person video testimonies from USC Shoah Foundation’s Teaching with Testimony collection.

New MLB STEM Career Profiles: Now that the Major League Baseball postseason is in full swing, five new STEM career profile videos are live in Discovery Education Experience, Science Techbook, and STEM Connect. The clips highlight a variety of MLB STEM careers in fields like data analytics, building construction, video production, nutrition program management, and sustainability.

Help students find their voices and know their rights: As part of its vast collection of resources for Constitution Day, Discovery Education produced “Constitution Day 2019: Find Your Voice” in partnership with iCivics. The unique event was designed to help students learn how their Constitutional rights give them a voice, how those rights are protected, and how they can use their voices to speak up about the issues they care about. The program and teacher guide are now available in Discovery Education Experience and Social Studies Techbook.

Honor and Remember with resources from the 9/11 Tribute Museum: Discovery Education has partnered with the 9/11 Tribute Museum to share the video testimonial series, 9/11 Personal Stories of Transformation. Available in the September 11 channel in Discovery Education Experience and Social Studies Techbook, the series profiles first responders, survivors, and witnesses to the September 11 terrorist attacks and explores how these individuals were transformed by tragedy to dedicate themselves to the service of others. An accompanying instructional resource guide provides lesson plans and discussion questions.

The channel features videos and images directly from World Wildlife Fund’s vast collection, offering students and educators an inside look at WWF’s efforts to support conservation along six goals: climate, food, freshwater, forests, oceans, and wildlife.

Uncover the weird and wonderful world of animal adaptations with Animal Planet: How do electric eels not electrocute themselves? Why don’t penguins’ feet freeze on ice? Why do dogs wag their tails? These questions and others are explored in the Animal Planet series How Do Animals Do That?, now live in Discovery Education Experience and Science Techbook.

Students bust myths with MythBusters Jr.: Students will use ingenuity and STEM skills to bust myths alongside Adam Savage and six of the nation’s most talented kids in Science Channel’s MythBusters Jr. Students will tackle myths similar to those seen in MythBusters, ranging from driving, explosions, chemistry, physics, popular culture, and more. And what does protein synthesis have to do with lemon meringue pie? Alton Brown explores the science behind common cooking techniques like searing, baking, and frying as he prepares traditional and brand-new recipes in Good Eats: Reloaded. The series is now available in Discovery Education Experience and Science Techbook.

Virtual Field Trip helps students develop Social Emotional Learning skills: Discovery Education, Wings for Kids, and The Allstate Foundation, premiered a new virtual field trip, Bringing SEL to Life, in Discovery Education Experience. The program introduces students to the key pillars of emotional intelligence: self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, social awareness, and relationship skills. Student viewers meet other real-life students who share a pledge called “Words to Live By.” The program follows these students throughout their day as they explain and model how the words of the pledge help them better understand themselves, control their actions, and strengthen their relationships.
