-District Math Teachers of Grade 6 and 7 Students Set to Integrate Award-Winning Digital Curriculum Into Teaching and Learning –

Silver Spring, Md. (January 31, 2019)– British Columbia’sWest Vancouver Schools(WVS)today announced a broadening of their multi-year partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital curriculum resources, digital content, and professional development for K-12 classrooms worldwide.  The latest phase of this partnership supports WVS’s grade 6 and 7 teachers’ efforts to create more immersive classroom lessons that drive deeper student engagement in math instruction.

One of Canada’s highest performing school systems, WVS uses a mixture of digital resources and educational technologies to support a richly woven learning experience that educates the “whole child”.  Since 2012, Discovery Education has partnered with WVS to thoughtfully integrate digital content into classroom instruction, and the district believes the expansion of this partnership bolsters its already strong reputation for offering students a level of academic excellence that exceeds independent school and provincial results.

To support their efforts to drive greater student engagement in grade 6 and 7math instruction, the district, selected Discovery Education’s Math Techbook.  Discovery Education Techbooks are currently used by approximately 5.6 million students across the US and Canada. The award-winning Canadian Math and Science Techbooks are fully interactive and comprehensive digital textbooks.  Updated regularly at no cost, Discovery Education’s Techbooks are aligned to Canadian provincial expectations and provide educators a complete digital curriculum that includes detailed lesson plans, hands-on activities, digital simulations, and robust teacher support that immerse students in instruction.

Through interactive features that change the reading level of text and enable text to be read aloud, the Math Techbook encourages all learners. The Math Techbook connects students to mathematics through real-world problems worth solving, combines conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application to help all students develop a long-lasting mastery of mathematics.  The Math Techbook has been independently verifiedby EdReports.org to meet the highest levels of mathematical content and pedagogy.

The Math Techbook is the second Discovery Education Techbook to be selected by WVS for classroom use. Currently, WVS educators teaching 1-8 students use the Discovery Education Science Techbook to support science instruction.  A digital textbook featuring hands-on labs, digital explorations, an interactive glossary, and data analysis activities, the Science Techbook helps teach students how to read, write, and think like scientists.

“At West Vancouver Schools, we work hard to ensure our academic programs are supported with the tools, technologies, and content students are interacting with outside the classroom,” said Chris Kennedy, Superintendent of West Vancouver Schools. “The expansion of our partnership to support math instruction is the natural next step in our longstanding relationship with Discovery Education, and we look forward to getting these resources into the hands of students and teachers soon.”

To ensure the WVS educators using Math Techbook are fully supported throughout the implementation of the new math curriculum, Discovery Education experts will provide robust professional learning opportunities to district teachers. Through these interactive professional development opportunities, participants will learn best practices for integrating technology and digital content into teaching and learning in ways that will maximize the power of their new resources, increase student engagement in math instruction, and improve students’ academic achievement.

The Discovery Education Community will continue supporting WVS’s teachers as they transform students’ learning experiences with dynamic digital media. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is honored that West Vancouver Schools selected the Math Techbook to support its effort to drive deeper student engagement in math instruction,” said Jason Buccheri, Educational Partnerships Manager at Discovery Education. “We look forward to continuing to collaborate with teachers and administrators on our joint mission to prepare every student for future success.”
