CITGO, Stanley Black & Decker, and Discovery Education Invite Students to Solve Real-World Problems for a Chance to Win $50,000

Call for Entries Now Open for Nationwide Challenges

Silver Spring, Md. (Thursday, September 24, 2020) – Supporting educators in the use of project-based learning, CITGO Petroleum Corporation, Stanley Black & Decker, and Discovery Education introduce two student challenges. Both the CITGO Fueling Education Challenge and the Stanley Black & Decker Making for Good Challenge are now open for entries to middle and high school students nationwide, showcasing creative problem-solving applied to real-world issues. Student participation in both Challenges is supported by a suite of digital resources that make student engagement possible in an in-person or virtual learning environment.

Details surrounding both Challenges are as follows:

CITGO Fueling Education Challenge
Closing Date: 3/22/2021
Grades: 5-8

Participating as individuals or groups of 2-4, students in grades 5-8 are asked to identify a community problem and submit a 1–2-minute video discussing a solution aligned to one of the four following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: safety and well-being, quality education, sustainable cities and communities, and life on land.

Prizing includes:

– Grand Prize: $20,000
– 2nd Place: $10,000
– 3rd Place: $5,000
– School Prizing: Schools with five or more entries will be put into a random drawing for a chance to win a $2,000 scholarship. One school will be eligible to win.

The Fueling Education Challenge extends the CITGO Fueling Education partnership program with Discovery Education, which paves the way for the next generation of STEM leaders. Through educator resources, student challenges, and dynamic video content, Fueling Education hopes to fuel the spirit of innovation in students everywhere.

Stanley Black & Decker Making for Good Challenge

Closing Dates: 1/28/2021
Grades: 9-12

Working individually or in teams of 2-4, students in grades 9-12 are challenged to develop a unique product design solution that either meets an underserved societal or environmental need.  To enter their idea, participants must submit a 60-90 second video outlining their solution and how it meets the need they are acting to solve.

Prizing includes:

– Grand Prize: $15,000
– 2nd Place: $10,000 and a prize pack
– 3rd Place: $5,000 and a prize pack

The Making for Good Challenge builds upon a Stanley Black & Decker and Discovery Education educational program – Innovation Generation – igniting, engaging, and empowering students to become makers through no-cost dynamic digital resources. Through real-world explorations of STEAM, Innovation Generation cultivates students’ collaboration, problem solving, and creative thinking.

The resources and challenges keep communities connected with dynamic digital content designed to support learning wherever it takes place.
