rrw 2020

SILVER SPRING, MD (Friday, October 23, 2020) – Discovery Education – the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources and professional learning for K-12 classrooms – provides powerful new content supporting healthy conversations among students, educators, and families during Red Ribbon Week 2020, observed October 23-31. The nation’s largest and longest-running drug-use prevention campaign, Red Ribbon Week mobilizes communities to educate youth about drug prevention through engaging activities and resources.

Through the support of Discovery Education’s diverse corporate and community partners, communities across the United States are empowered with tools to combat substance misuse through dynamic digital content designed for wherever learning takes place.

Aligning to the 2020 Red Ribbon Week theme of “Be Happy. Be Brave. Be Drug Free.” the following initiatives provide proactive strategies and standards-aligned resources helping ensure the health and wellbeing of students nationwide:

Dose of Knowledge
Expand students’ knowledge of the impact of substance misuse on their bodies and brains, and empower them to explore refusal tactics and strategies for responding to peer pressure with resources from Dose of Knowledge – part of CVS Health’s Pharmacists Teach program connecting pharmacists to classrooms. Join Dose of Knowledge, CVS Health, and Discovery Education during Red Ribbon Week to participate in live events and activities to inspire critical conversations and support the health and wellbeing of our students and communities.

Be Vape Free
A nationwide initiative for students in grades 5-12, funded by the CVS Health Foundation, in partnership with CATCH Global Foundation and Discovery Education, Be Vape Free gives students the tools they need to understand the vaping crisis and to make healthy decisions. Help students rise above common misconceptions regarding e-cigarettes with engaging and science-based resources, like the on-demand Clearing the Air Virtual Field Trip and the animated video topic series to get the real facts on e-cigarette use and the increased risk of complications from respiratory illnesses, like COVID-19.

Ask, Listen, Learn
Turn to a diverse array of science-based digital resources from Ask, Listen, Learn and Discovery Education to initiate conversations to teach kids to say “YES” to a healthy lifestyle and “NO” to underage drinking and underage cannabis use. Encourage positive and open discussions about the developing brain with an interactive self-paced module and an informative, science-based, video series created to help prevent risky behaviors and keep kids substance-free.

Operation Prevention
Created in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration, Operation Prevention engages students in grades 3-12 with English and Spanish language resources that provide an in-depth look at the science behind drug addiction. Originally created to address opioid addiction, Operation Prevention added content focusing on other drug categories in time for Red Ribbon Week. Mix-and-match any of the resources, like the on-demand Opioids: Real People. Real Stories. Real Science. Virtual Field Trip, the new multi-drug exploratory, or the self-paced learning modules to empower educators, families, and professionals alike to lead healthy lives and to understand the impacts of opioids, marijuana, steroids, hallucinogens, stimulants, depressants, and inhalants on student health.

“Knowing there is a wide array of resources to support and extend my lessons in a way that my students actually enjoy is such a relief,” said Alison Oswald-Keene, a middle school teacher at the Deer Valley Online Academy in Deer Valley Unified School District #97. “With this content in hand, I know my students will really learn about substance misuse prevention in a way that makes lasting impacts and helps them make healthier decisions.”

All of the resources and program content is available on the award-winning Discovery Education Experience, a flexible K-12 learning platform that connects educators to a vast collection of compelling high-quality, standards-aligned content, ready-to-use digital lessons, and professional learning resources. Experience users can find all the content in the Corporate Education Partnerships channel and the Health & Wellness channel.
