New Content Added to Discovery Education’s Award-Winning Services Helps Teachers and Students Honor Hispanic Heritage Month, Explore Current Events, and Much More

Silver Spring, Md. (Wednesday, September 30, 2020) — Discovery Education today announces the addition of hundreds of new digital assets to its award-winning Discovery Education Experience service. The new content, sourced from trusted partners, empowers educators to help students honor Hispanic Heritage Month, explore current events, and more in the classroom, at home, or wherever learning is taking place.  Discovery Education is the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms, and provides students access to exciting learning experiences no matter their location or device.

The new resources added to Discovery Education Experience helps educators:

Honor Hispanic Heritage Month by celebrating Latina women in STEM careers: Just in time for Hispanic Heritage Month, SciGirls: Latinas at Work, now available in the Hispanic Heritage channel in Discovery Education Experience, celebrates the stories and careers of Latina women in STEM. The series from Twin Cities Public Television features innovators, problem-solvers, and STEM superstars who celebrate their culture and heritage by sharing their passion for their work, hobbies, families, and helping to make the world a better place. Each episode of the series is presented in Spanish and includes English subtitles.

Get today’s most important news stories from Newsy: To help students easily access the latest news and information from wherever learning is taking place, Discovery Education has partnered with leading national news network Newsy to showcase daily current events videos about a variety of breaking news stories from around the world. Educators and students can find these stories in the News and Current Events and Newsy channels in Discovery Education Experience. In addition to the daily news stories, short- and long-form documentaries from Newsy will bring students an investigative perspective on human issues like the impact of environmental policy, the effects of immigration, the spread of viruses, and more.

Celebrate the 48 days between Constitution Day and Election Day: The new 48 Days channel in Discovery Education Experience showcases 48 instructional resources, virtual field trips, videos, podcasts, songs, and audio books across grade bands designed to help students better understand their constitutional rights and the important issues related to this year’s election.  With these resources, educators can inspire student agency and remind students about the importance of their voices, whether or not they are old enough to vote. Featured resources include Discovery Education originals and content from trusted content partners like Discovery Channel, BESE, Newsy, Cheddar K-12, World Wildlife Fund, and the Robert F. Kennedy Foundation.

Support English Language Learners: English Language Learners face the dual challenge of learning rigorous academic subject matter while simultaneously mastering a new language. For English Language Learners, the mastery of academic English is often an issue of access, equity, and social justice. The new English Language Learner Center in Discovery Education Experience provides a robust collection of resources designed to help English Language Learners as they unlock the language of academic success. The Center includes resources that focus on professional development, microlearnings, instructional resources and tools, multi-modal digital content, and immersive learning experiences. The Center offers educators a one-stop shop for learning how to leverage Discovery Education to support English Language Learners and will be regularly refreshed with new resources.

Access hundreds of newly-translated Spanish programs: More than 200 programs for grades K-5 have been translated into Spanish and are now available in the Spanish-Language Resources channel in Discovery Education Experience. The programs support a variety of scientific concepts including earth, space, life, and physical science.

Get lost in a great (audio)book with the newly refreshed Audiobooks Channel: Now live in Discovery Education Experience, 15 new Audiobook collections help all students access literature and enjoy books at their own pace. The Audiobooks channel refresh showcases more than 400 chapters of literature, allowing students to listen to beloved classics like Little Women and Frankenstein, novels written during Harlem Renaissance like Quicksand and Violets and Other Tales, fairy tales and folklore from a variety of countries and cultures, and poems and short stories from activists and writers around the world. The new additions to the channel broaden the scope of the collection’s format, genre, and language, and shine a light on formerly underrepresented authors.

In addition, on September 24, 2020, Discovery Education launched a new series of Equity Talks. This powerful webinar series features the nation’s top educational leaders engaging with one another in a virtual environment about equity and excellence in our schools. The informal and authentic conversations taking place during the Equity Talks focus on how COVID-19 has exacerbated the inequities that exist in our school system and have revealed how the nation’s leading education leaders are working to make public education effective for ALL students.

Now, all of the previous installments of the Equity Talks have been archived in a new Equity Talks channel and paired with robust summaries that include episode descriptions, pertinent quotes, additional questions and commentary, as well as other resources for consideration. New episodes of Equity Talks will be added to the channel as they are occur.  The Equity Talks channel is available in Discovery Education Experience, as well as the Science Techbook, Social Studies Techbook, Math Techbook, and STEM Connect.
