New York’s Newburgh Enlarged City School District Selects Discovery Education Experience to Support Social Studies Instruction
— Digital Resources and Professional Learning Opportunities Coming to Classrooms This School Year to Support Implementation of New Social Studies Curriculum–
Silver Spring, MD (July 31, 2019) — New York’s Newburgh Enlarged City School District (NECSD) announced today it has selected the latest generation of the award-winning Discovery Education Streaming Plus, Discovery Education Experience, to support social studies instruction in the district’s seven K-5 elementary schools, two K-8 schools, and two middle schools (grades 6-8). Discovery Education is the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms.
Located at “The Crossroads of the Northeast,” an area on the west bank of the Hudson River 60 miles north of New York City and 80 miles south of Albany, NECSD serves a diverse population of approximately 12,000 students. To support the implementation of the Integrated Social Studies/ELA Curriculum designed by the Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES, the district has launched a new partnership with Discovery Education. This new collaboration not only brings Discovery Education Experience to the district’s K-8 learners, but also provides NECSD educators the professional learning they need to meet the district’s goal of inspiring current students to become tomorrow’s leaders.

Discovery Education Experience supports instruction across all K-12 curricular areas. Through curated, personalized, one-of-a-kind digital curriculum resources delivered to the educator based on their preferences, Discovery Education Experience helps busy teachers save time and more easily differentiate instruction. The experiential and highly relevant content within Discovery Education Experience helps students relate to and better understand subject matter, driving deeper engagement and learning. In addition, the service’s up-to-date, high-quality, and ever-growing digital content collections, as well as a library of immersive virtual field trips, are drawn from trusted partners.
Discovery Education Experience’s engaging content is complemented by a rich library of creative, research-based instructional strategies for integrating digital media in meaningful, effective, and practical ways. Aligned to McREL International’s 6-Phase Model of Learning, these strategies foster skill development, complement different types of content, and are conveniently paired with content at the point of use. The new Discovery Education Experience also offers embedded content creation and real-time collaboration features through the Studio suite of tools.
“The Social Studies curriculum that we utilize in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District imbeds 2-7 Discovery Education resources per unit in our K-8 classrooms. These resources enrich lessons and provide our scholars with more rounded and meaningful learning experiences,” said NECSD Director of Social Studies Amanda Greene. “Being able to harness the streaming options through Discovery Education moves our district a step closer toward digital convergence and provides opportunities for educators to develop creative blended learning strategies.”
NECSD educators using Discovery Education Experience will also receive robust professional development from Discovery Education experts. Through these interactive professional learning opportunities, participants will learn best practices for integrating technology and digital content into teaching and learning in ways that will maximize the power of their new resources, increase student engagement in instruction, and improve students’ academic achievement.
NECSD’s educators will also receive support from the Discovery Education Community.
