Oregon’s Reynolds School District Expands Partnership with Discovery Education to Create Immersive Science Lessons for High School Students
–Combination of New Digital Curriculum and Professional Learning from Discovery Education Empower District Educators to Maximize Shift to 1:1 Learning–
Silver Spring, MD (September 12, 2019) — Oregon’s Reynolds School District (RSD) today announced the expansion of its multiyear partnership with Discovery Education the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms. In this collaboration’s latest phase, RSD’s high school science teachers are empowered to use Discovery Education’s award-winning Science Techbook and sustained, job-embedded professional development to create immersive, digital lessons in a 1:1 environment.
Serving students and families in the eastern Portland metro area, Reynolds School District is dedicated to graduating students that embrace lifelong learning and apply skills in technology, global literacy, creativity, and critical thinking to enhance family, career, and community. To help reach this goal, the Reynolds High School just launched a new 1:1 initiative that is putting new Chromebooks into the hands of each student. In addition, the district is shifting to a new inquiry-based approach to Science instruction designed to meet the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
To support RSD’s efforts to meet the NGSS, the school system selected Discovery Education’s Science Techbook for student use in high school science classrooms. The Science Techbook series empowers educators to transform science instruction through a rich digital curriculum that includes video, audio, text, interactives with hands-on activities, and virtual labs that help educators differentiate instruction and provide a rich and engaging learning experience for students. Additional student features include Spanish/English text-to-speech and leveled reading tools and note-taking and highlighting capabilities. The Science Techbook series also includes valuable STEM resources including STEM Project Starters that encourage students to connect math, technology, and engineering to their understanding of science concepts to produce creative solutions to real world problems. In addition, the STEM In Action resources help students connect their work to STEM careers, which promotes a clearer understanding of how skills used in school can be applied to jobs “in the real world.”

To help RDS’S High School Science teachers maximize the Science Techbook and their new Chromebooks in the coming school year, Discovery Education will provide district educators numerous professional development opportunities. Through these interactive professional learning opportunities, participants will learn best practices for integrating technology and digital content into teaching and learning in ways that will maximize the power of their new resources, increase student engagement in instruction, and improve students’ academic achievement.
