The new resources added to Discovery Education Experience and the Social Studies and Science Techbooks help educators and students:

Understand the Roots of Systemic Racism and Discrimination, and Learn About the Power of Protest: The resources in the new Dissent, Equity, and Inspiring Change channel within Discovery Education Experience and the Social Studies Techbook have been produced and curated to help educators facilitate classroom conversations and discussions about social justice, equity, implicit bias and systemic racism, constitutional and human rights, dissent, and protest. The channel includes content from trusted partners like Discovery Channel, USC Shoah Foundation, Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, BeSe, Common Sense Education, Cheddar K-12, and the Child Mind Institute.

Investigate the Importance of Equity: Discovery Education’s Equity Talks webinar series features the nation’s top educational leaders as they engage with one another in a virtual environment. Moderated by Dr. Luvelle Brown, superintendent of Ithaca City School District, this series focuses on how school leaders are cultivating equity and excellence in the wake of nationwide school closures. The sessions, which are archived in the Equity Talks channel in Discovery Education Experience, cover such topics as the assessment of student learning needs in a remote environment, allocation of resources, and budgeting for reopening schools safely.

Build Digital Citizenship Skills: Common Sense’s newest award-winning digital citizenship lessons and resources are now available in the Common Sense Education channel in Discovery Education Experience and the Social Studies Techbook. The collection focuses on important themes like digital footprint and identity, privacy and security, and news and media literacy. Lessons present authentic challenges and digital dilemmas, giving students the opportunity to build the skills needed to succeed as digital learners, leaders, and citizens. Lessons, videos, activities, and parent guides are available for grades K-12 with many resources available in both English and Spanish.

Focus on Social-Emotional Learning: Four new SEL-focused collections have been added to Discovery Education Experience. Stronger Together, produced in partnership with the NBA and the Child Mind Institute, features NBA and WNBA players and legends sharing how they stay emotionally healthy. Two additional collections from the Child Mind Institute–#MyYoungerSelf and #WeThriveInside–feature actors, Olympians, authors, comedians, advocates, and other influencers giving students and their younger selves advice about staying emotionally healthy and asking for help, and explain what it was like to grow up with a mental health or learning disorder. Also, new lessons and activities from Learning to Give help students develop empathy, compassion, and gratitude while learning to be giving and caring citizens.

Ignite Curiosity in History, Engineering, and Space Exploration: New programs from Discovery, Science Channel and Travel Channel added to Discovery Education Experience take students into outer space and beneath some of the world’s greatest cities. In Discovery and Science Channel’s NASA & SpaceX: Journey to the Future, students take a rare glimpse inside SpaceX Launch Control and witness behind-the-scenes action with teams of SpaceX engineers, NASA employees, and scientists as they fulfill the SpaceX mission. Travel Channel’s Metropolis uncovers the history and development of such famous cities as Rome, Paris, New Orleans, and San Francisco.

Amplify the Connection Between Innovation and ConservationThe Internet of Things: Infinite Possibilities Virtual Field Trip is now available in Discovery Education Experience and the Science Techbook. This virtual event, created in partnership with Itron, takes an exciting look at how the internet students use in their everyday lives can conserve natural resources, protect ecosystems, and create safer, more sustainable communities. Students will also dive into the world of cutting-edge smart technology and sustainable innovation by meeting talented real-world STEM professionals.

Uncover the Future of Sustainability:  In the Sustainable California series from University of California Television now available in Discovery Education Experience and the Science Techbook, leading researchers share their work on watersheds, drought management, endangered species, and more as they look to create solutions for sustainability in California and beyond. The series helps students envision a future for the world with biological and cultural diversity, well-managed natural resources, and low-impact living.

“There are a lot of difficult topics I need to teach my students and when I am searching for content to accompany my lessons, I want to be 100% sure it is appropriate, standards-aligned, and of the highest quality,” said Kristen Crain, an educator in Georgia’s Cobb County School District. “The curated content I find in Discovery Education’s services give me confidence to approach the difficult topics I need to teach and it is a critical part of my efforts to create classroom lessons that are powerful, engaging, and insightful.”
