A movement has started.

Mentors in science related fields from hundreds of companies in over 50 cities are inspiring our young people and sparking their curiosity about careers in science and helping students connect the dots. It's about getting caring adults into the lives of young people and creating moments of discovery that reveal the possibility in the worlds of science and technology.

Discovery Communications has joined this movement and is helping US2020 work towards their goal of matching 1 million STEM mentors with students at youth-serving nonprofits by the year 2020.

By 2018, there will be 1.2 million US job openings in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, with a significant shortage of qualified applicants to fill them. Children without professional STEM role models are less likely to consider STEM careers for themselves. This shrinks the STEM pipeline, leaving the country without the workforce necessary to fill critical roles, and millions of children without a chance to compete for jobs in one of the strongest sectors of the economy.

That's why we need STEM professionals to join this movement today and ignite that curiosity in the STEM professionals of tomorrow. Check out some opportunities to ignite moments of discovery and sign up today with one of the following high-impact organizations:

Big Brothers Big Sisters
Boys and Girls Clubs of America
Citizen Schools
Girl Scouts
