Fresh Water

Definition
Water that contains less than 0.2% dissolved salts; may or may not be suitable for drinking

Key Context
Sea water is not suitable for humans or other animals to drink. Humans and animals need to drink fresh water, which contains 0.2% or less dissolved salts. Other contaminants in fresh water may still make the water unsuitable for drinking. Fresh water is found in reservoirs like lakes and rivers, as well as in aquifers underground.
