During the Day of Learning experts will demonstrate how happiness impacts our physiology and psychology.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, suicide is the second leading cause of death for adolescents age 12-17 in the United States. Research from the Anxiety and Depression Association of America shows that one in four children are affected by anxiety disorders; these youth are at higher risk to perform poorly in school, miss out on important social experiences and engage in substance abuse. Happy people are healthier, live longer, earn more money, and do better in school and life.

“Discovery Education is proud to partner with the ‘LG Experience Happiness Initiative’ to host a day dedicated to teaching the importance of consciously pursuing happiness, while providing students and educators with the digital tools they need to foster social emotional learning and improve focus,” said Lori McFarling, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Discovery Education. “The ‘Day of Learning’ will highlight critical ‘Discover Your Happy’ work which promotes ways for youth to reduce stress, anxiety and live mentally healthier lives.”

Launched in 2018, Discovery Education and LG Electronics USA joined forces to create the Discover Your Happy program, an initiative designed to teach students that happiness is a learnable skill, as an extension of LG’s Life’s Good: Experience Happiness corporate social responsibility initiative. Discover Your Happy introduces skills and practices aimed at achieving sustainable happiness. These classroom tools are aligned with curriculum standards and are designed to provide engaging, hands-on activities for students to identify actionable ways to start their journey toward sustainable happiness, while bringing happiness to their communities through the Six Sustainable Happiness skills.

“The ‘Discover Your Happy’ initiative provides an awareness that stress could be alleviated through learning and practicing structured skills aimed towards your personal journey of happiness,” said Francie Snyder, Educator, Manatee County, Florida. “Celebrating the ‘International Day of Happiness’ helps me to identify resources that captive and inspire my students to understand the science of happiness, empowering them to help teach their peers, families and community those tactical skills.”

3M and Discovery Education Search for America’s Next Top Young Scientist in National Middle School Competition with Chance to Win $25,000 Grand Prize

–  12th Annual ‘Young Scientist Challenge’ Opens Submissions for America’s Next Generation of Innovators

Silver Spring, Md. and St. Paul, Minn. (Tuesday, March 12, 2019) – 3M (@3M) and Discovery Education (@DiscoveryEd) today announced the start of the 12th annual 3M Young Scientist Challenge (#YoungScientist), the nation’s premier science competition for students in grades 5-8. The 3M Young Scientist Challenge is designed to encourage the exploration of science and innovation among America’s youth and to promote the importance of science communication. Ten national finalists will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from a 3M Scientist Mentor, compete for $25,000, and earn the title of America’s Top Young Scientist. The competition entries are accepted until the Tuesday, May 7, 2019 deadline.

The program challenges participants to develop an innovation that positively impacts them, their family, their community or the world. Last year’s winner, fourteen-year-old Rishab Jain, created an algorithm to make pancreatic cancer treatment more effective by using artificial intelligence to accurately locate and track the pancreas in real-time during MRI radiotherapy.

“The 3M Young Scientist Challenge gave me the opportunity to learn even more about how we can use artificial intelligence to change people’s lives,” said Rishab Jain, America’s 2018 Top Young Scientist. “Any student that’s interested in science would enjoy this opportunity to come up with new ideas, learn from real scientists and win prizes. I am so thankful for this award and the chance to continue my love for science.”

Students in grades 5-8 can enter the challenge by creating a one to two-minute video communicating the science behind a big idea aimed at solving or impacting an everyday problem. Video entries will be evaluated based on their creativity, scientific knowledge, persuasiveness, effective communication and delivery. Ten finalists will then be chosen to participate in an exclusive summer mentorship program, where they will work closely with and learn from a 3M scientist. Each finalist will also receive a trip to the 3M Innovation Center at the company’s headquarters in St. Paul, Minn., to compete at the final event in October 2019. All video entries must be submitted online at youngscientistlab.com/challenge no later than Tuesday, May 7, 2019. Videos will not be judged on production skills and may be recorded on cell phones or basic digital cameras.

“At 3M, we guide America’s Top Young Scientists as they apply scientific learning to everyday life,” said Paul Keel, senior vice president of Business Development and Marketing-Sales at 3M. “Through our immersive summer mentorship program, 3M provides an environment to explore the countless avenues for which science provides an on-ramp. It is a real pleasure to work with these curious and creative young leaders to help them take their ideas from conception to reality.”

Launched in 2016, the Young Scientist Lab is an interactive portal for scientific exploration and home to the award-winning 3M Young Scientist Challenge. It is a one-stop STEM destination for educators, students and parents, offering engaging K-8 activities, lesson plans and interactive teaching tools to stimulate budding scientists. Students can find inspiration on how innovation can solve problems across industries, including: energy, safety, healthcare, connectivity, environment and more. The Young Scientist Lab also provides users with recent science news, Virtual Field Trips and new blogs about the 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

“The 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the premier competition inspiring intellectual curiosity in youth, invites students to expand their ingenuity, develop creative solutions and embrace the spark that leads to problem solving for our globe’s most pressing challenges,” said Lori McFarling, senior vice president and chief marketing officer at Discovery Education. “Discovery Education is delighted to collaborate with 3M to continue encouraging student exploration and critical thinking, while opening up access to the wonder of science. Together, we hope to demonstrate for students that STEM can change the world.”

Since its inception, the 3M Young Scientist Challenge has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in student prizes, paired students with world-renowned scientists to give them real-world insights and delivered much-needed science resources to millions of students, teachers and families across the country. It targets students in the years when research indicates their interest in science begins to wane and encourages them to explore scientific concepts and creatively communicate their findings. Winners have gone on to be featured in Forbes magazine’s annual 30 Under 30 list, speak in front of members of Congress and attendees at the United Nations, meet the President of the United States, and demonstrate inventions on national television programs such as ABC World News Tonight, Fox & Friends, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

“As an educator, I am thrilled to see the ways in which the 3M Young Scientist Challenge encourages young students to conduct experiments and provides them with the skills they need to apply scientific learning to issues around the world,” Francie Snyder, Manatee County elementary school educator from Manatee County, Fla. “Students are encouraged to let their curiosity and passion for science grow through hands-on learning while simultaneously developing essential communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills.”

3M Young Scientist Challenge materials are also available through Discovery Education Streaming Plus. Silver Spring, MD (March 4, 2019) – Pennsylvania’s Bethlehem Area School District (BASD) today announced the expansion of its partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital curriculum resources, digital content, and professional development for K-12 classrooms.  In the latest phase of this multiyear collaboration, BASD’s educators will soon begin using Discovery Education’s high-quality digital curriculum to create high school chemistry lessons that heighten student engagement and accelerate student achievement.

BASD is the sixth largest school district in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and serves approximately 14,000 students each day.  In partnership with students’ home and community, BASD provides a safe and supportive environment in which each student is empowered to attain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become a productive citizen and lifelong learner in today’s technologically demanding and culturally diverse society.

“Discovery Education has been an important partner in our comprehensive curriculum revision and has supported our goal of providing inquiry-based, student-centered learning to all students,” said Dr. Jack P. Silva, BASD Assistant Superintendent & Chief Academic Officer.

Last year BASD began integrating Discovery Education’s digital Biology and Social Studies textbooks into middle and high school classroom activities. Now, based on the successful implementation of these digital resources, BASD has adopted Discovery Education’s digital Chemistry textbook for use in high school instruction.

Currently used by approximately 5.6 million students across all 50 states and Canada, Discovery Education’s award-winning digital textbooks, or Techbooks, are fully interactive, comprehensive digital curriculums.  Updated regularly at no cost, Discovery Education’s Science, Math, and Social Studies Techbooks include detailed lesson plans, hands-on activities, digital simulations, and robust teacher supports that immerse students in instruction.

Discovery Education’s Science Techbook series empowers educators to transform science instruction. Utilizing an inquiry-based format built on the Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate (5E) model, each Science Techbook includes rich, standards-aligned content such as video, audio, text, interactives with hands-on activities, and virtual labs that help educators differentiate instruction and provide a rich and engaging learning experience for students. Additional student features include bilingual text-to-speech and leveled reading tools and note-taking and highlighting capabilities.  The Science Techbook series also includes valuable STEM resources as well, including STEM Project Starters that encourage students to connect math, technology, and engineering to their understanding of science concepts to produce creative solutions to real world problems, and the STEM In Action resources, which help students connect their work to STEM careers.

Discovery Education’s Social Studies Techbook, which is now used in classrooms across the district, utilizes an inquiry-based instructional approach that emphasizes informational text literacy, analytical writing, and problem-solving skills that students will apply in the classroom and beyond. Each subject area includes primary source documents and activities, digital investigations, multimedia reference library, interactive maps, and more.

To ensure the BASD educators using their new digital curriculum are fully supported throughout their implementation, Discovery Education experts will provide robust professional learning opportunities to district teachers. Through these interactive professional development opportunities, participants will learn best practices for integrating technology and digital content into teaching and learning in ways that will maximize the power of their new resources, increase student engagement in instruction, and improve students’ academic achievement.

“Each day the Bethlehem Area School District team comes to work with one mission in mind: to help each of our students prepare for tomorrow’s opportunities,” said BASD Superintendent Dr. Joseph J. Roy. “In partnership with Discovery Education, we are building exciting digital classrooms that are engaging students and opening their minds to all the great possibilities in their future. Our partnership with Discovery Education is off to a great start, and we look forward to its future success.”

BASD educators will also be supported by the Discovery Education Community as they transform students’ learning experiences with dynamic digital media. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

“The Bethlehem Area School District’s talented team is working hard to build dynamic digital learning environments for all students, and Discovery Education is proud to be supporting their effort,” said Discovery Education Partnership Manager Doug Long.  “We look forward to working closely with educators across the school system in their effort to heighten student engagement and accelerate student achievement.”
