-New course empowers educators and students with the digital resources needed to explore government, civic life, and the economy of the United States in a modern learning environment-

Silver Spring, Md. (July 18, 2016) – Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, announced today it has added a new Civics and Government course for grades 6-8 to the award-winning Social Studies Techbook. Discovery Education’s Social Studies Techbook™ is a complete digital solution that replaces traditional textbooks and features standards-based digital content that strengthens literacy, critical thinking, and citizenship skills.

The new Civic and Government course empowers educators and students with the comprehensive digital resources they need to explore what it means to be a citizen in the United States today. In a modern digital learning environment, students learn the rights, roles, and responsibilities of U.S. citizens and the structure and processes of the U.S. government. Featuring primary source documents, exclusive videos, and other dynamic digital content, the Social Studies Techbook civics course engages students through an inquiry-based learning process. The new Civics and Government course from Discovery Education also includes interactive features in which students practice civic discourse with debates and role playing. Students can use new online-entry features to check their understanding, apply their learning to new situations, and contribute to classroom conversations.

“Social Studies Techbook provides challenging and meaningful learning experiences for our students and encourages them to think critically,” said Tonya Faison, principal at James Martin Middle School in North Carolina’s Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. “We are looking forward to integrating this dynamic new course into instruction to further promote civic engagement and civil discourse among our students.”

Discovery Education’s Techbooks are breakthrough digital textbooks that are aligned to rigorous standards, support a comprehensive curriculum, and are updated regularly at no cost.  The series encourages all learners through interactive features that allow users to change the reading level of text and enable text to be read aloud. The Techbook series saves teachers’ time with a comprehensive design that places model lessons, student activities and assessments at their fingertips. Techbooks are platform neutral and can be used in 1:1 or 1-to-many configurations and in any instructional environment. Discovery Education’s Techbooks have been adopted in Alabama, Oregon, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Texas, Idaho, Virginia, South Carolina, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and South Carolina and are now used by approximately 3 million students in 50 U.S. states and Canadian provinces.

Discovery Education’s Social Studies Techbook series is organized around complex Essential Questions that students use to guide their inquiry, analyze issues, and propose solutions to better understand their world.   Aligned with the C3 Framework, Social Studies Techbook is designed to develop key literacy and writing skills and provides a multitude of resources to prepare students for college, career, and civic life.  Additional courses include:

  • World Geography and Cultures
  • World History
  • U.S. History series that covers Prehistory to Present
