(June 23, 2015) – Insight Into Diversity magazine has honored Discovery Education’s Dr. Cindy Moss with its 100 Inspiring Women in STEM Award, which recognizes 100 remarkable women whose work and achievements not only encourage others in their individual STEM fields, but also inspire a new generation of young women to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). A nationally respected thought leader in STEM, Dr. Moss has more than 25 years of experience in STEM education and currently oversees STEM initiatives for Discovery Education that empower educators worldwide to inspire students’ curiosity and prepare them for success beyond the classroom. As Discovery Education’s director of global STEM initiatives, Dr. Moss develops powerful programs providing students, educators, and administrators unique opportunities to engage in STEM education. Among Dr. Moss’ many achievements has been the creation and launch of Discovery Education STEM Camp. A dynamic series of standards-aligned curricula, STEM Camp combines hands-on labs, engineering challenges, digital investigations, and more to immerse students in the grand challenges of science set forth by the National Academy of Engineering. STEM Camp is used by schools, school districts, non-profit organizations, and parents for use as part of summer camps, after-school STEM programs or wherever support is needed. STEM Camp offers multiple sessions designed especially to engage girls in STEM and encourage them to pursue their education and careers in these increasingly important fields. Dr. Moss has contributed to additional STEM programs including the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the nation’s premier science competition for grades 5-8; Support our Science (S.O.S.), a multi-year effort launched in partnership with Science Channel to empower educators with the resources necessary to create digital learning environments that spark and grow students’ curiosity in STEM; and Discovery Education STEM Academies, which provide educators with new instructional strategies to engage students in STEM education and prepare them to be effective problem-solvers and lifelong learners. “It is an honor to be recognized by Insight Into Diversity with the 100 Inspiring Women in STEM Award,” said Dr. Cindy Moss, director of global STEM initiatives, Discovery Education. “STEM education is crucial for the future of our country, and through engaging initiatives and interactive experiences like Discovery Education STEM Camp, I hope to inspire and empower all children to become the creators, innovators, and leaders of tomorrow.” Insight Into Diversity’s 100 Inspiring Women in STEM Award showcases the careers and initiatives of women in STEM professions who continue to make a difference through mentoring and teaching, research, successful programs and initiatives, and are working to inspire and encourage a new generation of young women to consider careers in STEM. As a recipient of this national honor, Dr. Moss will be featured in the upcoming September STEM issue of Insight Into Diversity magazine along with 99 other recipients from academia, government, corporate, and non-profit industries. The issue will publish online and in print on August 24, 2015. “To advance diversity, promote equality, and build a stronger U.S. workforce, we at Insight Into Diversity recognize the importance of increasing the number of women working in STEM professions,” said Lenore Pearlstein, Publisher, Insight Into Diversity. “Our sincerest congratulations to Dr. Moss and Discovery Education on receiving this prestigious national honor. She is truly inspirational to all of us who are working so diligently to make a difference in the lives of all women and other underrepresented individuals.” Prior to joining Discovery Education, Dr. Moss was director of STEM for North Carolina’s Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS), where she led the district’s efforts to improve science teaching and was responsible for overseeing STEM curriculum for more than 130,000 students. Under her leadership, CMS teachers earned national awards and schools partnered with businesses to provide real-world STEM lessons for students. Dr. Moss also taught biology, chemistry and other high school science courses. In addition to being honored with Insight Into Diversity’s 100 Inspiring Women in STEM Award, Dr. Moss was recognized in STEMconnector’s inaugural 100 Women Leaders in STEM publication in 2012. She was also recognized with the North Carolina Science, Math and Technology Administrator Award in 2010, a 2010 Woman of Distinction in STEM Award from the Charlotte Girls Scouts, and in 2001, she won a National Educator Award from the Milken Family Foundation. Dr. Moss has given presentations across the globe on best practices in science teaching and authored numerous articles, textbook chapters and books for the National Parks Service and National Science Teachers Association. She is a member of the National Council of Supervisors of Math and the Urban Math Leaders Network, among many other STEM-related organizations. Dr. Moss holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she participated in the prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship program. She also holds a doctorate in science curriculum and instruction from the Curtin Institute of Technology in Perth, Western Australia. “Discovery Education is proud to count Cindy among our accomplished team of educators passionate about supporting the success of each learner,” said Bill Goodwyn, President and CEO, Discovery Education. “Cindy’s dedication to finding new ways to engage all students in STEM is remarkable, and this recognition is a well-deserved honor.” For more information about the Inspiring Women in STEM Award, visit http://www.insightintodiversity.com/inspiring-women-in-stem/ For more information about Dr. Moss and Discovery Education, visit https://www.discoveryeducation.com/what-we-offer/professional-development/speakers-bureau/cindy-moss.cfm About Insight Into DiversityINSIGHT Into Diversity is the oldest and largest diversity magazine and website in higher education today.
