What is Phenomena and what makes it engaging? By centering science education on phenomena that students are motivated to explain, the focus of learning shifts from learning about a topic to figuring out why or how something happens and connects that learning to the natural world. Explore example phenomena-based lessons as we share resources to get you started on building your own phenomena-based science lessons.

The newest version of the TEKS features recurring themes and concepts (RTCs), which involves ideas such as patterns, cause and effect, and systems that cut across all disciplines in science. RTCs give students useful lenses into their investigations of phenomena, helping them focus their questions and guide their investigations. This session will involve exploring the recurring themes and concepts using tools and resources in the NSTA Quick-Reference Guide to the Three Dimensions.

Escape rooms are games that ask groups to think critically, problem solve, troubleshoot, and work collaboratively to “escape” a room before the clock runs out. Teams follow clues and work together to solve puzzles that lead them toward a successful escape. Come join Discovery Education to unlock your daily learning platform for use in your classroom every day!

Friday, November 103:30 PM – 4:30 PM CT
Science is the process of investigating, describing, and explaining phenomena that take place in the universe. Research has shown that students learn science concepts much better if they investigate phenomena the way that scientists do. Selecting the right phenomenon will motivate your students to engage in scientific and engineering practices. Come see new ways to use phenomena in your classroom so that your students are both excited about science and understand it more deeply.
Get ready to infuse your elementary science lessons with fun and excitement! Our dynamic hands-on activity session is designed to provide you with practical, easy-to-implement strategies that will ignite curiosity and bring science to life. From interactive and engaging experiments and demonstrations, this session will equip you with the tools you need to create memorable learning experiences that resonate with the world of phenomena. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to preview Discovery Education’s Science Techbook!

Science educators are tasked with bringing the three-dimensional world into their classrooms. What if you could do that with one click? Join us as we explore high-interest, real-world media that brings science practices to life through the lens of a Texas Science Coordinator and Instructional Specialist. Learn how Plano ISD uses instructional technology, such as Discovery Education, to support all aspects of science instruction including hands-on, rich media, simulations, and real-world applications, no permission slips required.
The new Science TEKS include scientific and engineering practices, such as constructing explanations, and the new STAAR tests include short constructed responses where students are expected to give a brief explanation in their own words to demonstrate understanding of content. This session will focus on how teachers can support students to construct explanations of real-world phenomena in the world around them to improve their ability to think like scientists and understand core scientific concepts.
The new TEKS include the Three Dimensions of Scientific and Engineering Practices, Scientific Grade-Level Content, and Recurring Themes and Concepts. Come learn tips and tricks for the integration of these three dimensions from Ted Willard, one of the authors of Discovery Education’s Science Techbook for Texas and former Three-Dimensional Standards Expert for NSTA. Come celebrate better science learning for your students.
Saturday, November 1111:00 AM – 12:00 PM CT
The Atlas is a collection of 62 maps that show how the practices, core ideas, crosscutting concepts in standards based on the Framework for K-12 Science Education build upon each other and relate to each other over a student’s K-12 education. Participants will learn how to read the maps and use other tools in the Atlas to understand and interpret standards and plan instructional sequences as part of their work in curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
Saturday, November 1112:30 PM – 1:30 PM CT
