Join us for the 6th annual Discovery Education Superintendent Symposium, a two-day thought leadership forum for school superintendents, CIOs, CAOs, district and school leaders to come together with a strategic vision for building equity and inclusion, creating a culturally responsive community, and engaging stakeholders in their district’s transformation to hybrid learning.

Building on the momentum of the Discovery Education Equity Talks live webinar series hosted by Discovery Education and Dr. Luvelle Brown, superintendent of Ithaca City Schools, NY, the Discovery Education Superintendent Symposium is designed to help district leaders seize the unprecedented opportunity to transform and reform education with an equity lens in the 2020-21 school year.

The symposium will be held Wednesday, August 5 and Thursday, August 6, 1PM – 3PM ET

Guest educational leaders will explore topics such as:

Addressing Operational & Financial Challenges to Reopening Schools

Allocation of resources, like staff, time, and materials, with a focus on:

  • Health and safety for students and teachers in school, including procurement of PPE, facility modifications, cleaning, and social distancing protocols
  • Creative financing during crisis with limited resources
  • Funding for parent and community supports

Fostering Culturally Responsive Teaching & Learning

Evaluating partnerships and tools through culturally responsive and inclusive lenses, with consideration of:

  • Culturally responsive content to help promote inclusivity
  • Closed captioning, video transcripts, translation options, and text-to-speech to make learning more accessible to diverse learners
  • Additional supports and strategies that help teachers adapt content to specific student needs, such as English language learners (ELL), social-emotional learning (SEL), and Special Education

Meeting the Needs of Our Most Vulnerable Students

Assessment of learning needs for all students, with specific attention to the needs of:

  • Historically underserved groups of students, including students of color and low income
  • Early childhood students
  • Multilingual learners
  • Students with disabilities
  • Students experiencing trauma or temporary housing/homelessness

Keynote Speakers

Dr. Luvelle Brown

Ithaca City School District, NY

Dr. Luvelle Brown is the 2017 New York State Superintendent of the Year. He has served as superintendent of the Ithaca City School District (ICSD) in Ithaca, New York since January 2011. Prior to arriving in Ithaca, Dr. Brown had experiences as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, school CIO, and district-level leader in Virginia. Dr. Brown is a highly regarded speaker addressing a range of topics for local, regional, and national audiences. He has published numerous articles and books, including the recently released Culture of Love: Cultivating a Positive and Transformational Organizational Culture.

Dr. Sharroky Hollie

Executive Director, The Center for Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning

Dr. Sharroky Hollie is a national educator who provides professional development to thousands of educators in the area of cultural responsiveness. Since 2000, Dr. Hollie has trained over 150,000 educators and worked in nearly 2,000 classrooms. Going back 25 years, he has been a classroom teacher at the middle and high school levels, a central office professional development coordinator in Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), a school founder and administrator, and a university professor in teacher education at Cal State University. Sharroky has also been a visiting professor for Webster University in St. Louis and a guest lecturer at Stanford and UCLA.
