Discovery Education Honored with 2008 EDDIE Award for Elementary Science Service

Discovery Education Science for Elementary Empowers Educators to Improve Student Achievement in Science

Silver Spring, MD (October 16, 2008) – Discovery Education has been honored with a 2008 EDDIE Award by the ComputED Learning Center. This award recognizes Discovery Education Science for Elementary as the Best Science Website in the Upper Elementary category.

Released in January of 2008, Discovery Education Science for Elementary is a standards-based digital resource for upper elementary school students that features a broad array of high-impact assets covering life, physical and earth science. An extension of the award-winning Discovery Education Science for Middle School, together these two services offer a complete digital solution for educators seeking to improve student achievement in the sciences.

Linked to state standards, Discovery Education Science for Elementary empowers educators to use videos, animations, im ages, eBooks, and virtual labs to reach students through a medium with which they are familiar and eager to use in the classroom. Students can access the service with a unique username and password, enabling their teachers to create individual learning plans for each student. In addition, an online assessment component measures and remediates student understanding of science concepts throughout the learning process via a pre-test, mid-point check, and/or post test. This feature helps teachers assess student progress to ensure lesson goals are achieved.

“Discovery Education is dedicated to improving student achievement in science nationwide. Through services like Discovery Education Science for Elementary and programs like the Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge, we are committed to empowering students to master critical science skills. We are honored to be awarded this EDDIE and are grateful to the team at ComputED Learning Center for their recognition,” said Kelli Campbell, Senior Vice President of Content and Product Development for Discovery Education.

This is the 13th year of the Annual Education Software Review Awards (EDDIES). The ComputED Gazette and ComputED Learning Center, San Diego’s leading computer education resource, sponsor the award program. Targeting innovative and content-rich programs and websites that provide parents and teachers with the technology to foster educational excellence, the program selects winners from titles submitted by digital resource publishers from around the world.
