Data indicates that Reading Plus usage is associated with higher growth in ELA outcomes, regardless of achievement level, race, gender, or special designations.
Conducted by McREL International, the goal of this study was to understand how a district’s use of Reading Plus relates to both students’ level of attainment in the program and their standardized test scores on the South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Assessments (SC READY).
The hypothesis was that ELA growth outcomes for key subgroups of students would correlate to Reading Plus usage, which provides differentiation, scaffolding, and continuous formative assessments.
This study was reviewed by LearnPlatform to validate that Reading Plus meets Level III “Promising Evidence” requirements in ESSA.
What Were Some Key Takeaways from the Study?

- One hour per week of Reading Plus is associated with significantly higher growth on SC READY ELA outcomes.
- Reading Plus effectively personalizes reading support for all different types of students.
- Students with special designations were twice as likely to meet their Added Value Target when they completed 80 Reading lessons.
The above takeaways are consistently seen across subgroups of students, including achievement levels, elementary and middle school grades, students with special designations, gender, and race.
