The 5th Building Pathways event brought together a dynamic group of changemakers in Chicago, alongside the annual Discovery Education Network Summer Institute (DENSI).
With 26 attendees, including 10 corporate leaders and 16 curriculum leaders, the energy in the room was full of collaboration and shared purpose. Panelists from Verizon and Dr. Garcia of Hillsdale District sparked thoughtful conversations, shining a light on the challenges and possibilities ahead as education and industry work hand-in-hand to prepare students for the future of work.
Following the panel, attendees gathered in smaller roundtable discussions, diving deeper into ideas, concerns, and exciting opportunities. Some key themes began to take shape, including:
Educator Insights: Educators feel a disconnect between industry demands for “future-ready” students and the lack of clear benchmarks, especially around soft skills, not currently aligned with state assessments or standards.
Collaboration & Innovation: Both educators and industry partners expressed a desire to move beyond traditional models like career fairs, working together to explore innovative approaches that better prepare students for real-world success.
Emerging Topics & Challenges: The group highlighted concerns around the inconsistent definition of “career readiness” across industries and raised timely questions about how AI is reshaping skill-building in schools.
Join fellow local leaders in education, industry, and community relations for a dynamic and honest dialogue centered on equipping today’s students for tomorrow’s world. Together, we’ll explore actionable strategies and powerful partnerships that can ignite meaningful change in schools and beyond.

We’re thrilled to share a thoughtful piece by Catherine Dunlop, Senior Vice President of Corporate Partnerships and the newest addition to our Discovery Education team. Catherine underscores the powerful role educators play in bridging academics with real-world careers—and highlights how today’s employers can make a meaningful impact by partnering with education.
I’m already brainstorming ways to use the videos to spark inquiry-based problem-solving in my STEAM classes—like exploring urban overcrowding and its ecological impact.
