Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) is home to 205 schools and more than 125,000 students. On June 16, 2014, PGCPS partnered with Discovery Education to deliver a one-day professional development learning conference for the district's 9000 educators that focused on effective implementation of the Common Core State Standards.

To support the upcoming implementation of the Common Core State Standards, Prince George's County Public Schools was challenged with providing relevant, engaging professional development across all 9,000 educators in a short window of time. The goal: To enhance student learning and effectively integrate Maryland's College and Career-Ready Standards into classroom instruction.


On June 16, over 100 experts from Discovery Education in partnership with PGCPS instructional staff took part in an unprecedented professional development collaboration, teaching new instructional strategies and tactics to all of the district's 9,000 educators spanning across 9 High School sites in the county.


Throughout the day, educators learned how to use Discovery Education's digital content and other educational technologies to promote creativity and problem-solving, support literacy standards, and inspire curiosity in their students. A variety of informative sessions on topics including evidence-based reading, purposeful assessments, and using texts and tasks with rigor and complexity were presented, showcasing creative ways to implement the latest innovations in teaching and learning to engage students and accelerate achievement.

Participant Survey Results:

  • 7 out of 9 schools had 80% of its survey respondents rated their overall experience 3 stars or higher
  • 88% of Grade 9-12 survey respondents rated their overall 3 stars or higher
  • 86% rated the DE-led sessions "Excellent" or "Good"
  • 82% rated the PGCPS-led sessions "Excellent" or "Good"
  • 98% learned a CCSS (Common Core Standards) strategy they plan to use in the classroom
