The Gap, By the Numbers
- 71% of administrators say students are learning about careers weekly. Only 19% of students agree.
- 79% of teachers and 85% of administrators agree most students aren’t aware of career options beyond a four-year degree.
- By the time students reach ninth grade, many (78%) have already started forming ideas about careers that feel interesting, realistic, or possible.
- 95% of teachers say they need more resources to connect their lessons to real careers.
The message from educators is clear: they want career exploration in their classrooms, they just don’t have time to build it from scratch.

Strategy 1: The 3-Minute Career Bell-Ringer
- Pick a STEM Careers Coalition career profile video (most run under three minutes) that matches the day’s topic.
- Open class with it instead of a traditional warm-up.
- Ask each student to name one skill the professional used that they also used in a recent assignment.
- Keep a running “Skills We Share With Real Jobs” board and add to it all month.
This turns an abstract idea “this connects to a career” into something students can name for themselves, every single day.
Strategy 2: The Real-World Data Swap with Discover Data
- Take a data set you’re already using in a math, science, or ELA lesson.
- Swap in one of Discover Data’s real-world data sets tied to a career instead.
- After the lesson, show students the role and person behind that kind of data — a data scientist, client solutions exec, data engineer.
- If your school has capacity, invite an optional volunteer visit to make it concrete.
Strategy 3: The Challenge Pairing with Sustainable Futures
- Identify a unit that already touches climate, energy, ecosystems, or food systems.
- Pair it with a Sustainable Futures career tour showing a real professional solving that exact problem.
- Close with a quick discussion or poll: “Which of these problems would you want to work on?”
